Always have to top up coolant Empty
PostSubject: Always have to top up coolant   Always have to top up coolant EmptyTue Apr 13, 2010 1:02 pm

I can't remember when this started but it has been many months already.

I notice that my coolant reservoir always go down about 1/2-inch after about 1 week of daily driving.

I had asked SC to check the radiator for leaks but there was no problem. I know reduction in coolant usually means very aggressive driving but I rarely drive at very high RPMs (ok, maybe for short bursts of acceleration got la, but not prolonged high speed with high RPMs).

I'm just wondering what could be wrong, does this mean engine is getting hotter than normal and if so, why? Haih...

Faced this problem a few weeks back.

Just run your air-cond at 30degrees (hot air) to make sure that the coolant circulates well across the cooling system and drive the car abit.

Should solve the prob.

Elan, nothing wrong with my radiator cap la. SC tested the whole radiator using pressure.

Coolant stills continuously goes down even though I drive conservatively.

A tuner/modder told me today that this problem could be a number of reasons. He told me the reasons (hose leak, radiator bocor, radiator cap leak), all of which I said are not a problem on my Lancer (since a SC confirmed it)... except for one reason he mentioned, a reason that my SC never checked.

The tuner said "Check your head gasket".

Damn... I think I should go ask SC to check.

Yeah, will ask SC tomorrow how much time it takes to check it. Normally can use pressure gauge to check compression pressure but I not sure about our local SCs here.

If it doesn't take long to check, then I might just go and do it tomorrow (if SC can fit me in their schedule).

Will let you all know. I know if head gasket konk then got big problem, hope can claim warranty.

Guys, I checked with SC and SC told me that if I want to check head gasket then they need to file in a report to MMM for the reason why need to check head gasket.

So I asked them to file report, to include in report that coolant in coolant reservoir keeps reducing after checking that coolant reservoir connecting hose has no leak and that radiator has no leak or bocor, therefore recommend to check head gasket.

SC says usually MMM takes between 1-2 weeks to respond to such reports. So I gotta wait.

Will update when MMM responds.

bro rev,

IMHO, if the head gasket is the culprit of the problem, ur engine temperature will easily goes up more then normal, and u can find traces of oil in your radiator coolant. try getting second opinion from different SC or workshop

Yeah, if head gasket got problem, there can be a few signs, like engine overheating therefore leading to continuous consumption of coolant (= my case i.e. coolant keeps reducing) or steam coming out from exhaust (which I dunno got or anot since I can't see when driving!). In the cockpit's MFD, engine temp always appear normal.

There, however, are no traces of oil in radiator (as far as I can tell) and when I check the engine oil dipstick, the oil there seems normal (i.e. looks like just oil, no other stuff).

However, if MMM allows to check the head gasket, then I see no harm. If after checking and head gasket is fine, then I honestly dunno what to do/check :/

Rev, my coolant also fell to critically low level now. Happens after major service. I noticed it when i realize my aircond not so cold when the car is not moving. This aircond problem according to my mech is because of the disturbance in the direction of wind after i added hayden dawg.

I memang "larp" the car kaw kaw after major service. Will top up (the coolant) once and see if the problem persist..

Unichip kah?LOL Smile Your prob still persist after removing the chip?
